Surprising my sister on her 30th birthday

On the 20th January 2015, I spent the evening in a piano karaoke bar in Charing Cross. The year before that, I was in a pub in Victoria, wrapped up against the typical January cold. The previous year, I could be found dancing to Balkan Electro music (yes, apparently that is a genre all of its own) in Battersea. Want to know what I was doing the year before that? I can tell you if you like. Along with every January the 20th there’s ever been, bar a few unmitigated exceptions. That’s because January 20th is my sister’s birthday.

Monday musings…Roatan porn

Last night it snowed. This morning it dropped well below freezing. 24 hours ago we blew a socket which took out our electricity supply and our heating. The timing is less than ideal. With a day booked off work to wait for an emergency electrician, I was faced with two options: Sit in the freezing house, wrapped up in scarves, seeing if I could warm up a tin of soup just by breathing on it. Take myself and my laptop to the deli up the road and drink gallons of tea whilst indulging in ‘Roatan porn’. Still on a high after booking our flights, naturally I chose the latter…

Monday musings…TPOTY 2014

When all you see throughout your day is a computer monitor, a water-cooler and the back of your colleagues’ heads in meetings, it can be easy to forget that there’s a bottomless pool of things to amaze you just outside the door. Thanks The Guardian’s Travel Photographer of the Year  competition, the beautiful, The obscure and the awesome can be brought right to your screen, so that your little office world becomes that bit bigger on a Monday morning. These winning shots have got me dreaming about a day when I can see the wonders that our world has to offer with my very own eyes. In the meantime, I’m adding Kulkulkan Cenote, Riveria Maya to my ‘to-dive’ list…
